Pre-Course Information: PBC I

Welcome to Presence-Based Coaching Part I: Being a Development Partner! I look forward to having you here very soon!

The materials below will take care of a few nuts and bolts items, and outline several hours of pre-course work that will make your retreat more meaningful.

Please read my welcome letter which includes important logistical information, retreat details, and driving directions. Please review this soon to help in your planning.

Please note that The Mindful Coach (revised 2010 edition) is the text for your retreat.  You may order from Amazon or your local bookstore.  Please read the entire book before arrival. Doing so will provide the cognitive framework for the richest possible experience at the retreat.

Sometime before your arrival, do the following, in this sequence:

  • Read The Mindful Coach: Seven Roles for Facilitating Leader Development. (If you already own the original edition, you may read Chapters 1-4; however, the new edition is greatly preferred!)
  • Complete Exercise I.1 (in Introduction) and Exercise 1.2 (in chapter 1.) You do not need to send these to me; they are simply to help you clarify for yourself what you do that's coaching, and to make a connection to the material. (If you have the original edition, please do Exercise 1; there's no equivalent for the second exercise.)
  • Download and read the brief article by Brenda Ueland on listening.
  • As the final piece of pre-work, please visit the pre-retreat questionnaire and respond to the questions.

For PBC I and PBC II, 25 pre-approved hours of coach-specific training are available for each retreat at an additional cost of $250. You may have already purchased the CCE's; if not you may decide later. The cost includes a faculty review and feedback on a recorded coaching session plus all documentation.

You are welcome to arrive the evening before your retreat after 7:00 PM (Lodge is being cleaned from a previous group and will not be ready before then.) Most participants will arrive the night before, and it's a great opportunity to meet your colleagues and settle in for a relaxed start the next morning.

Cost for the extra night is $62 (tax included) which can be settled on your arrival. There's no need to make a reservation. Also, please note time critical details in the letter on shared transportation to the Lodge. If you have dietary restrictions, please email our caterer, Dava Melton, no later than the Monday before your arrival. It may not be possible to honor last minute requests.

Please consider this really as a retreat; plan on early morning starts and evening sessions. While we'll take longish lunch breaks, we strongly recommend against planning to visit friends in town or joining outside conference calls.

Please bring:

  • A journal to write in
  • Appropriate clothing, walking shoes, etc, for a range of outdoor conditions. (You can check our local weather outlook the day before you travel to help in packing.)

Feel free to call or email with any questions.

Thanks,
